What about those Reslo Ribbons the beatles used? I see them on ebay...cheap...
What is it with those ribbons? Can you describe the sound anyone? I've heard Elvis first album...is that kinda, ribbony or what? I love that sound...

Do ribbons add more colour than tube mics, in general?

typically the ribbon is shielded with a wire mesh screen.

Not the Nady, where there is a large clearance between ribbon and protective screen.

I have 2 Nady ribbons now. I liked the first one so much for female vocals that I bought another to try them on drums. I am very satisfied with the results. They have taught my cymbals how to act polite. :) I'm also using it now on male vocals and can't wait to try miking amps with them.
I now have 2 preamps. A Groove tubes Brick and a Studio Projects VTB-1, both provide more than enough gain and both are quiet. The Brick adds a very professional quality to the sound but the VMP-1 is also cool because of the output control which enables you to get some tube overdrive. It certainly doesn't have the sound quality of the Brick, but it is quiet and for under $100. I'm not complaining and use it a lot.
I should also mention that these ribbon mikes are much quieter than my MXL V67, which I also like, but it's a whole different sound pattern than the Nady. It's not that the condenser is noisy, it's just that it picks up more extrainious sound, whereas the ribbons are a fig 8 and they don't pickup as much background sound, so if you don't have a real good room, that may be another reason to try a ribbon...
If you can't tell, I'm a newbe, so some of the more experienced guys may want to edit my observations and that's o.k. with me, cause I'm trying to learn here too and would like to thank all the pros for giving up their time for us wanna be's ;)

nobody can comment on the reslo vs. say a shure 330?

Electro-Voice designed a number of microphones, like the RE15 and RE16, to have a very similar sonic character to the RCA 77 ribbon.

Haven't checked lately, but new RE16's can probably be had for under $200.

In addition a used one (or the discontinued RE15) can be bought used in fine
condition for typically under $150 or so.

The RCA 77D (cardiod) was the vocal mic at Sun for their artists (including Elvis). Later when Elvis recorded at RCA, his main vocal mic was the RE15,
partly because the AE's there were tired of repairing broken RCA ribbons!
The RE15 was also Dolly Parton's main studio vocal recording mic there.

The AE's at RCA favored the RE15 and RE16 as they wouldn't exaggerate a female vocalists bottom range like a "regular" cardiod.

The RE15 (or EV 666) were the primary vocal mics at Chess between 1966 and 1972 BTW.

The unique "sound" at Sun was largely due to Phillips AE skills, and the
compression-like impact of recording in a small (read tiny!) studio that had
been acoustically laid out in masterly fashion. Having the band and the artist
performing all at once contributed to this focused synergy too.

P.S. These EV's aren't ribbons-they just sound like one.

Yes.... and no. To my ears the difference is quite obvious. In close miking, although they have a little bit less proximity effect and more high end, with good mastering they can sound quite similar. The situation changes in distant miking (2'+), where ribbons simply cannot be matched.
