I'm trying to record Guitar on some 70s cover material and am trying to recreate the Nile Rogers sound. The guitarist plays it very well and on its own the guitar sounds great. When the sound is balanced in the mix however, the sound is over percusive and lacks body particuarly in sections where the chord is sustained. The set up is a standard Strat through a Marshall Tansistor amp 2*12. I have noticed from another band I play in where the Guitarist uses a Roland JC120 that the sound is quite nasty and very loud by itself but sits in well when the whole band is playing. I'm not a Guitaist and dont really know therefore what the sound should be in isolation, my current thoughts are to add a small amount of Chorus or dirty the sound up a little through the preamp
Anyone got any ideas?

A couple of things that might sweeten up the sound. Try cutting some of the bass, it can really come through like a bass drum and maybe add some midddle. Plus the greatest invention ever (for me anyway) put some compression in.

My reason for this is that sometimes the guitar can have a really low action and the strings hit the neck and it comes thru like a rim shot. The compressor will remove this.

It's going to be a trial and error, but one thing I have found is that the sound you gig with is not always the sound you want to record.
Good luck
