Hat STYLE. Not contents.
Hey everybody!

A while back, I took one of my older songs and rewrote it with more serious (and I think less inane) lyrics.

I just finished recording it using a borrowed FastTrack Pro and my first condenser mic (an MXL 9 hundred something). With the better signal chain, you can hear all my mistakes that much more clearly. Awesome!

As always constructive criticism is appreciated.

(This link is to the tab. Click the title of the song to download the MP3).

Im on phones so I wont say much on the mix...I liked the song and performance and even on phones it sounded pretty clear..the drums seemed very low in the mix..that would be the only thing I notice through these

like I said good song and performance, sorry I cant say much else :)

You're definitely one of the most original guys around here, that's for sure....:D
Not bad though, drums are almost inaudible though, let them bite thru a bit.
Good song, could be mixed better.

Joey :):):):)

Thanks.

I'll see about doing a new mix this evening with louder drums. (I'm a little apprehensive about that since drums are definitely my weak link. They're the only part that wasn't recorded with the new chain.)

its weird but all us non drummers reckon that drums should be pretty easy..Id never approach a bass the way I used to approach drums...real or not

Its the thing Ive learned most on this forum about how difficult yet important getting the mix of drums right, now every mix I do is centred around the drums and not the vocals etc

funny, as they are played by complete morons in real life

:D

Drums are the most important part of any mix, and the hardest to get right. It's worth the effort though. A bad ass drum presence makes less than great guitars or vocals tolerable because that stuff is subjective. Drums aren't. If the song uses drums, they have to be there. Listen to rock, country, techno, punk, ska, polka, or whatever, and if it's a good mix, you can hear the drums. All of them.

If I were the drums in this song, I'd kick your ass in the middle of the night while you sleep. ;)

^^^This is true^^^

Even as a definite non-drummer, I work the most on drums when tracking and mixing. Everything else follows. Great guitars and vox and keys (and whatever else) will still sound like amateur hour (to me anyway) if the drums aren't there. And great drums will bring the rest of the mix to life.

I don't go to many concerts, but when I do I pick guitar-head shows. And when I saw Van Halen, I liked Alex the best. When I saw Dream Theater, it was Portnoy.

Disclaimer: All that was said as general opinion--not commentary on this tune. I haven't listened to it yet!

Right. You can record 5000 dollar Les Paul's through Hendrix's actual amp in the best room in the world with the best mic on the planet and the song will sound like ass if the drum mix sucks.

"If you've got a rockin' drummer, you've got a rockin' band." - Dave Grohl

As a corollary, if you've got a subpar drummer....

Seriously though, IMO, the only element that may be able to compete with drums on the "make it or break it" scale would be vocals. But like somebody said, different people can have vastly different opinions on what a "cool sounding" vocal is. Not so much with drums.

As for the song, I like it. Has the non-pretentious DIY vibe and all that. I definitely agree that the drums are too quiet.

Matt

Ok. I've uploaded a version with the drums turned up significantly (though I left the maraca at the level it was at.) It's available through the link above.

If you want the old version for comparison, it's here.
