Slate's offering a saturation plugin called Revival. Subtle but cool. Oh...and free.

I wish they would ditch the iLok thing - looks like you have to have one

Yeah, I got an iLok 2 a long time ago - there were just too many great tools that I wanted that required iLok. I don't understand the debate. It costs 50 bucks, it works, it opens doors.

But if you don't need it for anything else, then the plugin is $50, not free. :(

Exactly. It depends how you choose to look at it though. Fifty bucks to get a free plugin working is not exactly a good deal. But fifty bucks to be able to get five kickass plugins working is worth it. Of course, you have to factor in the cost of those five plugins as well. :D I figure you can get by with free stuff, but I want the freedom to get what I want (if I can afford it).

Is this a limited time kind of deal?

I was shopping around the other day and was interested in getting the entry-level Lexicon reverb plugin. Same deal, it requires an iLok 2. I was bummed. But I have a feeling that I'm gonna need one sooner or later.

I just hate dongles...seems as if the majority of software devs can rely on a regular old authentication method, why can't the devs for Steinberg, Slate, etc. do the same? I can't imagine that an iLok is any less crack-able than any other authentication method. It's just using yet another USB port on a computer that's already pretty stuffed full of USB devices by nature.

Well I broke down and grabbed an iLok a few days ago. I got the Lexicon reverb and went ahead with this Slate Revival. With this one, you download a trial version of several Slate plugins for their virtual rack and they all expire in 14 days except Revival. Not too bad, but some extra baggage for anybody that might be a little short on storage. I didn't immediately notice much with Revival on a bass guitar track thru headphones, but I'll have to play with it a bit more to see what it might shine on. By cranking each of the two knobs I could hear more highs or lows, but it's pretty subtle.

I found it more noticeable on the lows. I put it on the drum buss in a mix I'm working on and it made an instant difference. I wish to hell it didn't boost everything though - it makes it more difficult to judge.

I didn't bother installing the rest of the demo package though. How do you like the channel strip stuff?

Honestly, since the other components are going to expire in 2 weeks, I didn't bother giving them a try. I'd just end up getting something just right and have to change it in 2 weeks when I can no longer use them. They look pretty, that's about all I can say :)

I need to snag a new ilok. Sort of rubs me wrong being forced to upgrade at full price but it will probably happen down the road. I currently have 2 of the older ones so buying yet ANOTHER one sucks.
