just got a few new toys.... i mean... "tools" for the studio. thought i would share my first impressions

first item
m audio octane
first impressions out of the box, knobs feel very cheap. the are made of plastic. looks alot heavier in the pictures. still a very good sounding 8ch mic pre. very clean, neutral sound. very low noise too. i must say there is a jump in gain toward the top. i had read about this before buying it, and it IS there. the m/s matrix is very cool. could spend hrs messing with this. overall, a good value for the money.

at2020 microphone
would not be my first choice for a first mic. it is still a useful tool though. it excels at micing things that suffer from proximity effect. for instance, is exellent for getting really close to an acoustic guitar. sounds good on my voice. very clean sound, low noise. not good on my 1 x 12 combo amp. too bright. good say...... good ambient room mics. 8-10th mic purchase i would say. i mainly bought a stereo pair for close micing acoustic instruments.

epiphone valve junior
killer little tone machine. only has one knob, VOLUME! lol this thing sounds awesome, and at $120, i would say a must have for tone variation in the studio. will probably replace the speaker soon though. it distorts a little too quickly for my taste. people say you can fit a 10" in there. we'll see. ;) i plugged it in to a 1 x 12 celestion cabinet, sounded great. also sounded cool with my 4 x 12 celestioin cab. who needs eq when you have different speaker cabinets. haha

vox pathfinder
another very cool amp. solid state, but still a very warm sound. i actually found myself rolling a bit of low end off on the amp. has quite a bit for a little guy. love the onboard tremolo. will probably end up being a giging amp for me as well as a tone tool. very light weight, but plenty of volume to hear over the drummer. sounded cool running a rhodes through it also. love the vintage look of it. chicken head knobs rock!!!!!

yeah, just thought i would share, for those of you looking for similar items.

thats quite interesting what you say about the Pathfinder... i was going to get one as my main amp, but i was told not to because it wouldn't be loud enough over the drummer. i never got round to getting anything different. if i start to use my guitar more, i may well have to rethink getting one. you're right, they Do look great :p

and its good to read reviews like that... nice and spontaneous, and not being over analytical about a certain aspect of the equipment that someone's asked you about.

cool :D

well, i dont know how well the drummer would be able to hear it. ;) i usually have the amp on the floor in front of me, aimed back up at about 45 degrees. just mic it, and send it to his monitor. probably depends on what style you are playing. definately not for heavy metal.... lol

Hook that Pathfinder up to a 1x12 or 4x10 cabinet and see how loud it gets! :D i've gigged with mine connected to a 4x10 and it does fine. for a real basher, though, i'd want to mic it.

i also LOVE the way it records. it's a fantastic little tone machine for $100.

interesting to hear about the epiphone amp....been wondering about them. gonna have to get my buddy at the local axe shop to loan me one. how's the distortion sound? is it more "fender" like or more "marshall" like? i've been looking for a cheap low-watt tube amp that gets really ugly. :D

cheers,

probably more like the fender. it is crunchy, more of a natural "break up". although it is class a, not class ab like fenders.
