Hi,

When I play a VST instrument in Cubase and I play back the recording I don't get latency, but the opposite: I hear the instruments played back slightly too early. What can I do about it?
Thanks,

jumpcake

IDK - But I will pay big bucks for that plugin effect!

Jumpcake's mom: Jumpcake are you messing with the space- time continuum again?

Jumpcake: No mom. Just getting in a little recording.

Alright seriousness now ................ Do you have any effects assigned?

Thanks for replying, moresound.
Having effects assigned doesn't make any difference, I may or may not have them.

I had the same thing happen right before my motherboard took a shit.

You've got some type of timeshift happening. Which was recorded first - the other tracks or the VSTi's?

I usually first record EZdrums, after that other VSTs, usually Halion sounds from Cubase, then audiotracks (guitar/vocals).

Your computer knows what you're going to play before you play it? That's truly something special.

I suspect you're not explaining clearly what is happening.

When I first lay down a drumtrack in EZdrums there's nothing wrong. When I record VSTinstruments after the drums and I play back the recording the VSTs are played back slighty earlier in relation to the drums. I can't be clearer than that.

Okay, that's clearer. How are the beats lining up? Are the VSTs actually playing before the beat, or are the drums playing late?

The one thing that immediately comes to mind is whether you are using an ASIO-supporting audio interface or not. If not, I'd expect these kinds of problems. If you are using ASIO, I'd recommend you try a bigger buffer and see if you still have this problem.

If I compare the recorded ezdrumspart with the clicktrack in Cubase they are exactly in time, if I compare the VSTinstruments (that I've recorded after the drums) with the clicktrack the VSTs are played slightly earlier.
I mean slightly earlier, but enough to annoy me (maybe I'm supertight myself lol).

I always have to adjust the VSTtracks with usequantize function and I drag the track +0.0.0.30. But that's crazy, I have to do that for all VSTs.
How can Cubase overcorrect its own Halion sounds?

Then it sounds like your EZD track is getting delayed - does its waveform lineup with what you are hearing?

What version of Cubase are you using. Have you messed with preferences?

Cubase typically has accurate delay compensation for VST's, though it seems you may have something weird going on here.

Depending on what version you are using, and what OS, you can default to the original prefs files.

The software is over-correcting for latency. Maybe.

Or perhaps the player is over-correcting for latency. He hears his notes played back late when he's playing live so he unconsciously plays early to hear the live monitoring correctly. Each note is recorded when it's played rather than when he hears it back.
