Hi guys,
I'm beginning to research digital mt recorders. And I am interested in the VF08 and VF16. If some of you Fostex users have a few minutes please feel free to comment. I'm listing what I have and what I would be doing and would like to know if these two units are ok for this.

Have:
standalone cd recorder
16 channel mixer(has 8 direct outs)
plenty of good mics(57s and 603s)
good computer
424mkIII(what I use now)

What I do now (and would like to continue in digital)
play and record my own stuff overdubbing(acoustic guitars, mandolins, electric guitars, synths, electric bass, some vocals)
play with and record 2,3,4 person groups simultaneous (acoustics, keyboards, bass, vocals)

I (and some friends) do this as a hobby. No demos for gigs or anything like that. I like to mix the tracks and make cds for our own use. I do not use the computer for any of this except for making mp3s and putting them on the mp3 forums. This is the first time in the Fostex forum (spend most of my time in the cave with all those buttheads, he he he).
Thanks for any comments.

Why bother?
You suck!!!!!

Ummm... just thought I'd follow you from the 'cave so's you wouldn't feel homesick. ;)

Really though, I have a Fostex VM88 mixer & I like it alot. I almost bought a VF08 from a hock shop. Not that that's a lot of help to you or anything...

it helps alot, bitch, he he he he he he

ok jj, do you use the VF08?

dtb

I think the Fostex digital line all use similar components - the pres and the converters on the VM88 sound pretty good. I don't have the VF-08, I woudn't own the POS. :D (just kidding.)

shit jim,
my bad,

"I almost bought a VF08"

got excited, thought maybe somebody out there was gonna give me some imfo.

cool,

dtb,I have the VF-16 and love it.From the description you gave on your needs I think it would work great for what you are doing. My only complaint is that it only has 2 xlr inputs.
I have had it for a year and still dont know all that it is capable of:( .I get great sounds out of it and I am pleased with the final results every time.

thanks Ginzoo,

having only 2 xlr inputs is cool as long as it has 1/4 inputs also, up to 6 or 8. the way it looks and reads there are 6 1/4 ins and 2 xlr ins for a total of 8. is this correct? I know the reading says 8 analog ins and 8 adat ins( I think ). If this is correct then I could use my mixer for using more than 2 mics. I'm not sure about the adat ins. If you have any mp3s recorded on the VF-16, and have them on anywhere let me know.

Thanks,

dtb

In all seriousness, the VF-16 would give you a lot of power to work with. I think I was discussing it with Ginzoo on paltalk one evening. You could also add on an outboard ADAT converter for a couple of hundred bucks for 16 inputs. Of course, it frightens me to think of what you and your pals could do with all of those tracks...

now, get back to the 'Cave where you belong!!!

Hey dtb,yeah it has 8 1/4inch ins, 2 xlr, 2 rca, midi in/out, adat in/out, scsi.
No,I dont have MP3s posted any where yet.I will very soon.I am still trying to get into the digital realm with my equipment...

Yeah, yeah I know....My bills will be paid off very soon and my little vacation pad/money-pit will be sold THEN I am going on a shopping spree:D .

The Terratec is on my wish list.

Yeah, I know. To be older and have responsibilities... Who knew??? And why didn't they warn me? :D

I'm a newer user of the VF160. Just did my first recording of my three-piece band last saturday night. And I was sooo suprised by how GREAT everything sounded.

I am a total beginner and placed the 6 mics where I thought they should be around our drummer's massive double-bass, six-tom, four cymbol set. Unfortunately, because of the 2 XLR limitation, I also bought a small Peavy 6 channel mixer to take the 6 xlr's to mix, then to 2 tracks on the VF160. I did a direct-in with the bass. And miced the guitar amp. Got all the levels good and jammed one song. I am still suprised at how well it came out for me. To quote Primus .."Is it luck?"

Anyway - besides the 2 XLR limitation and am really happy with it so far. PLUS it has a built-in cd-recorder .... But - again - this is a opinion of a guy taking his first steps into digital recording. I could see that if you were real experienced, the VF's might get limiting.

a ron ron get around rondo,

that's what I'm looking for my friend. folks who use these units. your jam session story took care of many ??? I had. I've been analog far to long. And don't get me wrong. Analog is warm and real sounding, and I'll never get rid of my tape gear. But it's time to explore new ground.

thanks again,

dtb

Oh yeah, put up some mp3s, here's some of mine. remember, I'm all analog on these. even the BBS song.

Cool - glad I could help. I havent yet tried to do a mix-down on my VF160. But as soon as I do I'll post it.

So which unit do you think you're going to get?

thanks rondo and Ginzoo. And I guess you to Greg, even though I don't know for what. I just bought a Tascam 788 used for 625.00 with free shipping. Thought it was a good deal. Thanks again for ya'lls help.

dtb,I look forward to hearing your stuff on your new machine.:) I hope you enjoy it as much as I like mine.

I have a vf08 and I've found that the actual recording time is minimal compared to the massive amount of time I spend editing and experimenting. This thing is great!!!!

Don't tell me that Finiz, Some of the dudes here say you can spend about half the $ and do what I do on the puter, but I didn't think sitting at the puter editing sounded like fun. I guess sitting in front of the Tascam could be fun. he he he he

This is the Fostex forum, Tascam man. Stay the hell out. :D
