Dudes...

I just wasn't happy with the first recording of this, so I did it over. And I'm going to do a couple more over too while I write new songs.
It's fun applying newer experience to older songs, and my hope is to finish enough material for a CD this year.

I'm looking for general mix opinions, production ideas or critiques, performance problems (bad vocal line, annoying guitar fuck-up, etc.) and whatever comes to mind...stuff to work on after a healthy break from it.

I wish I could give you a smaller file, but I have too much attention to detail and time into this to reduce it to a 128k MP3. :( Maybe I'm anal- I don't know.

Oh ya, I did a track of lead guitar over it, but I couldn't figure out a proper mix, and just decided it was over kill. But I'm aching to do a guitar solo if anybody needs one. :D

Great guitar and drum sounds.

I especially liked the little guitar line in the middle of the peice.
 
Man, it's OK if your anal, as long as it turns out like this. Your attention to detail is apparent here. Keep it up

Jake the drums are DFH (tweaked, of course) and the chorus guitars are Les Paul and Paul Reed Smith through a Marshall (layered tracks) miked with a SM57.

Chad- you got me listneing to "Twenty" the other day...I'm gonna have to go over that a little, but I think it might make the CD after I re-do the vocals and fix the drums, etc...

I thought the entirety was extremely tasteful and well manicured. THe performance was smooth and flowing. I didnt like the harmony around 2:30. But that only lasted about .04 and melded. real nice man.

I liked the song. Reminds me of a slow Dream theatre kinda progressive rock. Your vocals sounded very Roger Waters at times. Thats a good thing. Man Im diggin this tune.(listening right now) I think the rhythm gtrs could of been a little heavier but thats just my preference. Very creative.

Okay one more thing. Just came to me, you remind me some what of "Al Stewart" [year of the cat] vocal wise just a little. Ok carry on:D

Stellar stuff as is your norm.

The only thought I had on the production side of things is that the impact on the change from soft to hard with the full gits coming in could be more dramatic and impactual. Sounds a bit subdued to me.

Maybe give the gits some high end or more level or add some sort of almost shrieking element to accent the dynamic change more. Maybe that lead solo git wouldn't be overkill.

Just some thoughts. Wonderful tune. Good to hear you again.

First thing I'm noticing is the huge (but cool!) reverb on the snare drum... different! The up-front vocals are very cool, and they make a difference.

"Put the razor back in your voice..." and "By the time they realize it..." there's contrast now; the close, and the far-away.

Did you retrack guitars? They sound like the same performances... or maybe you're just good :)

This is a happening mix. The little accent guitar (lead line, clean) around 3:45... left speaker... way cool how it stands out of this mix, now ("stands out", not "sticks out"... if that makes sense)

There's a bit more of your signature vocal sound, here... that "sound" that mixmkr said you were missing.

"This world is harsh"... that part is much smoother this time w/the voice-over... seems like the levels were rougher in the other version.

Gotta tell you... I was singing along w/my SLuiCe CD today the last hour of work... headphones on, delivering mail, against the rules :) Ya... "Twenty"... awesome song.

An odd note... in "Feathers and Bones"... I hope you never change that vocal part "and last night soaked the ground..." sounds like you're choking on emotion there, or something... but it just freakin' works... a strange detail to bring up... but it's been on my mind a while. Thought it was time to share :)

BTW, what ever happened with that song you submitted to the radio station?

The SLuiCe CD is fast becoming one o my faves. Lemme know when I can buy an official one, and stop pirating your mp3s ;)

I cant' make any suggestions, I just wanted to say good work and the vocal intonation was very tight.

How do you get the AM radio voice sound in that one part?

your stuff is getting weirder and weirder. Not the usual 4/4 stuff where you clap your hands or click your fingers.

lotsa details going on in here.. I found it very interesting to listen to. So...when you go trout fishing, this is what you usually hum when reelin' 'em in, huh?

Has the elements of some the wackier ELP stuff.

and...the gtr is getting heavier and heavier.. pretty cool stuff, Mr. Kokopeli!!
 
oops forgot... I like this version much better. I think it was worth re-doing. Too many little cool things to comment on, but you know where all of them are anyway.
 
Toki987 - Thanks the ears...I'll check out that harmony.

Myx62 - Yeah, prog rock for sure...It's got kind of a Queensryche arrangement too. I used to listen to DT's "Metropolis" album....those guys know their instruments well! As for the guitars, I'm working on it...Thanks.

David - I working with mic proximity more "attentively" these days, as I learn more about my own voice and how to use it. With a windscreen I can capture some interesting nuances from 6-8 inches away that I wouldn't normally be aware of, etc etc... I love microphones. I love micing a guitar amp too. I don't necessarily like my guitar amp, but I love micing it and trying to capture the richest sound I can. I'm not familiar with Al Stewart, but I'll keep an eye out. Thanks for the kind feedback, David.

Theron - I agree, I was trying to figure that out yesterday in fact, but I could decide on nothing to solve it. Maybe in time something will come to me...thanks for reinforcing it for me and for taking the time to listen.

I need to listen to this on another system, as I can never tell how much snare verb I really have on my monitors. Don't know why. But if you say it sounds good I won't worry for now :)
Regarding the guitars- I retracked about half of them- bear in mind I've wrote this song about 7 years ago so I know the guitar parts pretty well. Getting the right guitar sound is another issue...still trying.
"Feathers" needs a little more development, but the vocal tracks are staying. I want to get some real instruments doing crazy things that work.

- I never submitted it. I came down with it's-not-really-radio-music syndrome and have yet to recover. Let's face it- I'm not a radio guy. :)

Smokepole - nice name :) I got that sound partly by using a throatier voice tone (which I use when I want to get under my own skin :) ), but mostly by cutting an average of about 20db out of everything below 1K. I may have even boosted 1-2K by a few dB's.

Edit: Sorry just mixed ya mix- it gets really quiet in my head when I'm fishing :) I hear this stuff when I'm at work building things. I was singing around in the house yesterday and I found some voices I'd like to try with your latest tune. It will probably be weird, but you know that.

Fresher ears tell me you guys are right...the Les Pauls needed to be louder! The new file is heading to nowhere...well it's not actually heading to nowhere...you now what I mean.

Phew! That's one piece of work! Fantastic! The guitar playing - perfect timing but still tons 'o feel. And I still can't believe that's synth bass - well I can believe it when I really listen, but you totally pull it off.

My only criticism - the snare is not sitting right with me, especially in the loud parts.

OK, one more. The heavy guitars really have the hi-gain sound going. Especially since you're using a Marhall I think you can open them up a little. I find that as you layer guitars you hear more of the hi-gain characteristics. But you're probably going for hi-gain sound, and you're doing a great job.

I'll be listening to this one a lot. I dig this kind of music and you've got it down!
