Replacing Pickups

Putting in your own pickups

I’m sure someone has posted something on this before, but I can’t find it.

I’m wanting to replace the pickup in a old guitar. What is the degree of difficulty of doing this myself? Is this something most people can do or is it better just to let a pro do it?

Thanks

If you can operate a screwdriver, and a soldering iron, you should be OK to try it yourself. Most pickups come with a diagram to show how they need to be wired into a guitar, and will usually include enough detail for most apps. To make life easier pull the old pick-up out to see if it is a 2 or 3 wire pickup. Then you simply buy a new one and wire it up exactly as the old one.
You could always modify your electronics while your at it, and can achieve some pretty radical changes in the way your guitar sounds, but that might be best left to a pro. Of course, you could try anything and make it a learning process, and if you do screw up, you could still send it to a pro.
