Replacing 5150 cab with V30's or Century V30's ?

I'm gonna record a CD next week....and I wanna get a heavier metal sound from my 5150 halfstack.

I was thinking about taking out 2 of the sheffields in my 5150 Straight Cab, and putting in some Vintage 30's in an X pattern.

But, I was going to order a pair tonight and noticed they are now made in China.......which on lot of forums people say they are not as good now, but I don't know.

So, then I noticed the new Century Vintage speaker.....only 10 dollars more, and 1/3 the weight.

Anyways, should I get the regular V30's, Century V30's......or something else like the Eminence Governors ???

Speaker choices can be tuff,there are so many options to choose from. About the only way to make comparisons is to use one of those "speaker selector" displays that they have at some big music stores. Or just take your head and try some cabs that have diff. speakers in them.
One thing you can try that won't cost you a nickle is to disconnect one or two speakers in your cab. Driving the remaining speakers a little harder might give you the extra "umph" your looking for. Of course you'll have to switch imp. on the amp to match the cab. Unless your running it at deafening volumes in the studio this won't hurt a thing.

I would thing for recording purposes only one speaker would be close miced? maybe two depending how your doing it.

I think hooking up to different cabs 1st is a great idea before spending money on new speakers. Maybe the studio will have different amp set ups for you too?

Maybe Go direct instead of micing your cab?

I was a long time Celestion fan...and now I don't own a single one. The Emis destroy them. The Govs are wonderful speakers, as are the Private Jacks and the Red Fang. I have yet to play a bed speaker from the new Emi line. Better speaker, better price, and made in the good ole USA.
