I hav kicked around the idea of replacing my sound card, really only because everyone on these boards seems to say I can do better.

I record only guitars, some electric and some acoustic. Right now I run my guitars into a Behringer MX 1604A mixer. I then use RCA cables to run from the mixer into the front RCA jacks of the Audigy 2 Platinum. I am on a budget but if I went with something like an Audiophile 2496, what would my setup be? Would I still use the mixer's RCA jacks or would I use its 1/4 inch jacks?

What are you monitoring on? If you don't have a decent monitoring system that's probably where you should put your money.

I had an audigy (not audigy 2) and upgraded to a delta 1010lt. Although I'm happy with the new soundcard I would, if I were to do it all over again, upgrade the rest of my chain first. Monitors, mic, preamp AND THEN soundcard. For me the monitors was the weakest link, and upgrading my soundcard didn't do as much for me as I thought. When I bought my tannoy reveals It was like putting on glasses (ok, I borrowed the expression from regebro).

Just a thought.

Don't think about the cables. If they don't think, buy new ones.

And Swede has a good point. What are you listening to?

But you'll get rid of all the Creative driver-hazzle when you get a new card, your computer would actually become stable.

I haven't had any stability issues with the creative card.

About the monitors, I guess I don't know how to use them i guess. (Please laugh at the following part) I use my 400watt Logitech speakers for playback in sonar. Sometimes i record through a mic, or sometimes play directly from the pickup into the mixer. After I'm done recording I just play back through the logitechs. If I am recording a track to add to other tracks, during recording I will then use headphones.

I am trying to give as much info as possible. Someone help me with this monitoring stuff?

And what about a preamp? (Does the mixer do that since it has phantom power?)

I doubt the logitechs are accurate enough for mixing. If I were you I wouldn't buy a new soundcard until I had a decent monitoring system (tannoy, yorkville etc).

A good point, but there's no need to overkill the speakers. ;)

Buy something that's in your budget, but as my fellow scandinavian says, better speakers wouldn't kill you... :)

Sounds like we have a similar setup. I upgraded from an Audigy Platinum a while ago to a Delta 1010. Found it on Ebay for $420. Definitely a good move IMO. I also record guitars (electric, steel string acoustic & nylon acoustic) into Guitar Tracks Pro. I'm very happy with the Delta. I also got some monitors (M-Audio SP-5B) which work fine for my little bedroom hobbyroom.
