I got a early 80's "Ross Fame Series Bass 50" bass amp
50/60hz 130watts and 8 ohms min for the ext. speaker. 12''
I searched the net for info on it a while back, and the only thing i found was that it is a cheeper version of a fender series amp, i seen a pic and they look identical.
this amp was phasing in and out, it wasnt really the volume changing, but the tone. after searching this site for hours, i randomly came accrossed a forum witch held the answer, first it said dirty inputs could be the cause, then pots, so i drug it out and started messing around with it, and low and behold it was the bass pot, its been collecting dust for a while. so i cleaned the bass pot with electrical cleaner LPS NOSpark <i am going to replace all the pots one of these days> and it worked great, until i tryed the bass up all the way. it almost blew the hat off my head, i was too close to the speaker. and it only did it once, blowing the speaker in the process. damn it, why cant this shit be easy, so now i need a speaker, a bass speaker, and i never bought a speaker before so...
I assume its a 50 watt amp with 130 watt if 'struck by lightning.' since it is a fender <kinda> i might like a fender sounding bass speaker <maybe> but our band plays 'Heavy Bluesy Metal'. i would like something that can handel slap and pop well, that a bass player wood like. <right now in our band we are three guitar players taking turns with two plywood basses>.
Personaly im currently lacking in funds, however i dont what that to take away from good suggestions that others could gain from, on this thread.

So, what went on here, a spike/amp circuit failure or what? Out of the blue it killed the speaker?

Idiots folly

No, some idiot cranked the amp all the way up <every thing at ten> and hit a low E. <with an electric guitar> it was the original speaker, so i assume it was its time.
on another note: do you think i could sell the old speaker???, its probably 'vintage'. its fore sale if anyone wants it, i'll get the numbers off it tonight. the blown speaker in mean, not the amp. the speakers just got a couple small cracks around the cone, i dont think its off center yet.
i herd reconeing, wasnt worth doing, is this true?

The EV will sound darker than the JBL. I'd suggest you stay with their bass speaker models. Any of the EV's or JBL's should be able to handle your 50 watt amplifier. The "130 watts" listed on the chassis is how much it will draw to put out that 50 watts.

The English "Fame" loudspeakers, and StudioMaster Musical Instrument amplifiers, were distributed under the Ross division (along with Ross brand amplifiers) of International Music Company (IMC) in Fort Worth during the 80's. Later, Akai bought IMC and closed down the Ross part of the operation

Right on

Cool Harvey Gerst, i knew there was something up with the 130watts vs 50watts, thanks for clearing that up for me. and i like darker so EV it is.
you are excluded from the list of known bass holes.

During the late 80's, I was Director of Electronics at IMC and was responsible for all Ross and Fame products.

Two decades earlier, I designed the JBL "F" series of musical instrument speakers.

In the 70's, I designed the Acoustic Control amplifiers (which had EV speakers as an option), so I'm pretty familiar with all the products you mentioned.

dude, come back.

Oh dude
i spent quite some time trying to find info on this amp, and came up with nothing. so a little insight wood be sweet, is it a low end fender, like i read on some random forum, or is the same as the fender series amp?
is it a reliable amp, can i turn everything up to ten, safely?

No, it's not a Fender. As I recall, it was made by Samick for IMC from Korea, I believe. It's an ok amp, but not great.

Know the Truth

Right on man, thanks for the info, its a bit disapointing but i'd rather know the truth. I'll take your advice.

im gunna keep my subscription to this thread incase anyone has something to add.

Tone Tubby Superboy 10, 50 watts of hemp cone sugar for your bass......besst price is from South Valley Vintage Amps.

Unfortunately, it's a 10 inch speaker and they dont make a 12 inch version. They have a 15 inch Superboy. Dont know much about 12 inch bass speakers, they dont seem to be the most popular size for bass for some reason. Celestion makes bass speakers, but they are hard to find and are not common in the USA.

But Harvey's advice is your best bet......hard to beat a good EV for anything....and the bass versions are easier to find, I think.
