bollocks redux!
anyone here have any advice/observations from experience about good 12ax7's and/or el-84's to use? i'd like to swap out the stock ones in my epiphone valve junior. i have a nice nos valvo 12ax7, but i'm kind of saving that for either a preamp or a tube mic.
anyone here use the ei's or the jj's? are the electro harmonix and/or sovteks any good?
thanks to anyone for anything they can share! :)

The JJs are a bit more aggressive, but I mean that in a very nice sense. Their highsare a bit hyped so it gives guitars nice bite. The EIs are as close as you can get to a Telefunken, very open and airy, I like them very much. I put an Amperex Bugle Boy in mine and it's fantastic!
EL 84s... The sovteks are okay, they have great reliability, but again, EI makes a heck of a tube. The tone of the EI is literally second to none, has a lot of the tonal qualities of the Blackburn factory tubes (mullard, brimar, etc.)
EIs... I tell ya...

cool-- thank you very much. i've read a lot of hype about those and they're cheap enough to just go for it! :D

Just put the JJ's in my Valve Jr, now I gotta get my cabinet together to test 'em proper-like. Hope they live up to the hype, but for 20 bucks, cheap gamble to take.

JJ's are getting a bunch of use lately because the QC is great! They don't sound the best of all the tubes out there but they always sound good and I've never had a bad one!

i replaced the tubes in my VJ with some JJ's from eurotubes and it sounds great.

i opted for the "high gain" version of the 12ax7 in the preamp socket. it does get a little dirtier earlier......and it's a nicer dirtier.

i put JJ's in my silverface champ too, and it sounds SO much better than it did with the ElectroHarmonix (rebadged sovteks) tubes i had in there.

for $20 or whatever, you can't go wrong.

cheers,
wade
