I dont know where to post this so here it is. Im thinking of renting my mobile rig.It consists of rack, Alesis DH24, 3 Focusrite Octopre's (24 channles of preamps). Maybe also my big splitter. Now, as I do live gigs from time to time and mix their final project I can at times get a bit swampped. I have a full time job and the recording thing is only for fun. So....when Im real busy, maybe rent the rig. A band can record their own live gig or take it home and work on project. My question is what price? Per day, per week/month? In my city I dont believe you can rent a rack like mine at all,at least from the checking around I have done. My rig of course will be insured.

I think that is an awesome idea. As a musician and a recording hobbyist (though I am completely unexperienced), I can think of multiple occasions where I would have loved to rent a rig to record some gigs without breaking the bank and be able to have complete control over the process.

Now I have no idea what to charge. Make sure you get collateral before you let some gigging musicians borrow your rig as well. Make sure to have them sign a contract as well.

Lexus,
yeah I thought I'd have to get some kind of deposit, ID credit card # and driver license. Of course this is all assuming I can rent to upstanding musicians. With that said, Im thinking $250.00 Friday night to Sunday night, return by 6pm.

I am currently putting together the same idea/concept, EXCEPT I will be there operating the equipment and keeping it in my custody at all times. ;)

I think your crazy if you hand out/rent your stuff to people you dont know. Its a very real possibility that it may come back broken, not well taken care of, or maybe even not returned at all, depending on where you live and who the people are.

Thats too big a chance for me. It goes..I go with it (or one of my hired gun engineers) goes along. Just build in an extra $50.00 for the hired gun engie for the night.

And I dont think 250.00 for a whole night (even though the recording isnt going to be near as good) is asking too much compared to what they will invest in going into a Studio.

Good Luck with it!! ;)

Peace
AJ

I rent a Sony CDR-W33 for $35/night, and a Masterlink is $100.

110 bucks a night for a masterlink? wow, that seems like a lot, but I guess if you have to have one its less than buying one. I go out always with my gear also, I just thought seeing that in my town there is no rental stuff to be had there may be a market for it. Course, if there is none to be had it may also mean there is no need. I dont think Im the only smart guy to come up with idea...I wouldn't think.

Hey, if you see a niche, try to fill it. And as a hobbyist, you are freed from the burden of needing to be profitable (totally no offense intended). My rates are pretty much what I need to cover my costs based on labor and maintenance figures, plus some actual profit.

I got cut off before, I was going to point out the ML goes out with cables, discs, a stereo attenuator (cause the ML has no level controls) and a MD or flash backup. You WILL get a recording :). Every cable, connector, button, function, menu, gets checked on the way out and the way in. It has to be that way so I can ensure my customers get what they need. It never goes out for less than $60, naked in a rack with the manual.

Give it a shot, why not. Though I think renting as a hobby won't be nearly as fun as recording and mixing for a hobby.

A good rule of thumb for rental pricing is charge 10-15% of the retail price per day. Multiply your day rate by 3 or 4 for the Weekly rate.

I think an HD24, three Octopres, and cables is pushing the line as far as being able to get 10%. I'd have a hard time asking $400 for that. I'd give up cheese if I could get 10% for my PA. :)
