Rename Audio Inputs

Does anyone know how to change the names of the audio inputs in the per track drop down box? Right now, mine has 18 different possiblities and it takes a minute to remember which one corresponds to which piece of hardware. It would be nice to give them easy, descriptive names.

I would assume the names come from the sound card's drivers. In that case you wouldn't be able to change them - unless you know how to edit the drivers. :)

I don't think they can help you. It's the drivers that name the inputs/outputs...
 
In GT Pro (Sonar's probably similar), go to Options, Audio, Drivers.

You can double click the Alias name to change it, and it will change in the track drop down

I have a MOTU 24I/O and I did it this way:
In regedit find all 'PCI-424' , Double click 'FriendlyName' and change the data to something shorter (I used 'Motu 24I/O')
There's a large number of these, 30 or 40 ? I changed them all.

I also have a MOTU 24I/O. You're right the names are long and are identified as 12 stereo pairs instead of 24 individual names (i.e. Left 1, Right 1, Left 3, Right 3. It would be nice to see channels 1, 2, 3, and 4... etc.

I also have a MOTU MIDI Express XT. It manages and maps all my MIDI controllers (including the Mackie Control surface) and their corresponding sound modules. I was looking for a way to get the long name for each MIDI port to be descriptive of the devices that are plugged in. I'll bet there is a similar set of "FriendlyName"s for the MIDI Express driver on my system.

This is cool if it works (I'll try it tonight).

Can anyone think of a down side to doing this? Like problems installing patches or "FriendlyName"s getting overlaid during driver upgrades?

This is always "dangerous" when mesing with the registry, but the update will probably just overwrite the current settings.
