Removing vocal

How would I go about removing the vocals from a pre-made CD? For example, lets say I want to record my own version of stairway to heaven and just want to get rid of plant's voice. How would I do this? thanks

think about like this.

you're making cookies.

You've got eggs, sugar, milk, chocolate, etc.

you put them all in a bowl and mix it up.

ok, now take the eggs out...

see what I mean? :D

That said, you can try to find some plug ins called vocal removers that zero in on audio sources not panned and in the vocal frequency range but these filters will take out much of the music, altering it drastically.

good luck, tho.

The method eluded to involves inverting the phase of one of the stereo channels and then collapsing it to mono. Anything that is panned to the center, like vocals, will be phase canceled and sort of removed. Also things like bass, kick, snare, etc, will also be removed (removed isn't really what happens, more like attenuated and made to sound very strange).

good call, TrackRat.

I forgot that they used phase cancelling instead of EQ. Still, what I've heard of them is consistently garbage-y.
