Removing tape hiss

When trying to remove tape hiss (from mixdown from an analog source) on either cakewalk proaudio or sound forge (4.o?) is it effective to use a noise gate? If so, approximately what frequency range should I look to cut. Perhaps there is a better way than a noise gate?

There's a Sonic Foundry Noise Removal Plug-in.. Really cool.. It can scan the noise print and then remove them..
