When trying to remove tape hiss (from mixdown from an analog source) on either cakewalk proaudio or sound forge (4.o?) is it effective to use a noise gate? If so, approximately what frequency range should I look to cut. Perhaps there is a better way than a noise gate?

A noise gate is not the best because it will work only on silent points. When there is music, there will be hiss.

Use the various parametric EQ and sweep around till the hiss is lessened. (try 4000hz)

Tro Cool Edit Pro's Noise Reductor. It works for me. PM me if you need help using it.

What's a "parametric" EQ? I use the "graphic" EQ on Cakewalk, which is 20 GUI sliders on the screen.

I'm doubting he does....probably figured it out 8 years ago ;)
What gaive it away, Benny; the reference to Sound Forge 4.0, the reply from Dragon, Dragon's link to a long-obsolete website, or the July, 1999 timestamps on every post in this thread up until then? ;) :D

I hope he took Dragon's advice - that guy's got literally a million rep points!!
