Hope someone can help me out with this. I want to remove background noise from a speech. The background noise is general talking, clinking of dishes and the such. It's not too loud but a bit annoying. Any ideas (software or technique) to filter out the background sounds and just leave the main talking? I tried a gate but didn't have much luck.

Adobe Audition

I know Adobe Audition has a wonderful noise reduction tool built inside of it. Id say one of the best programs for someone with a small budget but wants great tools that come with it. I beleive a similar tool called DINR for Pro tools costs $500 + and thats just for the noise reduction plugin.

So. from what i know. Adobe audition is great software and has an amazing tool for noise reduction built in.

If you want the try it out here is the 30 Day trial link:

:D

Sound Soap is a great plugin for this and I'm pretty sure offers a free trial.

If the noises are coming from a variety of sources, you are most likely stuck with it.
'Noise Reduction' generally deals with repeating sources, like ac hum or a particular frequency. Your edits would all have to be manual and depend on every noise and you are still NOT going to separate out a dish clattering over a voice.

Garbage In > Garbage Out. Computers aren't magic.

Tried some noise reduction with no luck. I didn't record it. I was trying to help out. Yeah, garbage in - garbage out. They should have recorded right out of the board.
Thanks all

If you can live with/prefer the admittedly strange sound of the background dropping out between sentences, perhaps a gate on the voice could work. If you can find a setting where the bg lowers by 6db or so between phrases, it might work. It most certainly won't sound "natural" but could be worth a shot.

Best,
C.

yeah, a gate would help some... maybe some really drastic EQ drops in very narrow bands, but again, things like plates aren't going to get any better.

As said before, it ain't gonna sound good, but what I would do is boost the frequencies around the bulk of the speech and cut everything else...

Meh... Just keep it all in and put a lot of reverb on it :D

In any case, I wouldn't use a gate, I'd use an expander, or automation to pull the volume down when there is no speech. If you go to complete silence when there is no speech it sounds worse than if you leave the mess in than whipe it here and there as the ear will get used to the constant sound and ignore it more, compared to having the mess here and not there.

Just reverb it.

Second on trying the expander, but that's about all you can try doing... gating will just make it more noticeable that there is background noise.
