You guys were so helpful with my previous questions, I thought I would throw another newbie question out there. Any recommendations for maximizing the audio recording of a performance using consumer equipment? My daughter will be doing some vocal recitals. I typically videotape the performance, but obviously the audio is terrible. Can a typical videocam audio recording be enhanced? Beforehand with external mic, or afterwards with engineering magic? It is not practical to set up a mic for the performance, so I assume the benefits of the vocal recording mics will be lost or diminished at a distance. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

A lot just depends on the room acoustics. You are almost guaranteed to get better results with an external mic closer to the singer. How you go about that just depends on the budget.

You can add a bit of compression or eq after the fact to tighten things up but your best bet is going to be getting a nice clean signal with no camera noise and less room ambience.
