Remote Control Idea

I was just about to post about the keyspan product.

I bought one of those last year. It works very well, a little tricky to program but once it's setup your done.

I programmed the keys to have control over the following:

Left Locator
Play
Stop
Record
Delete last take

You will end up changing some of the key assignments within your software though - doesn't seem to like certain numberpad assignments.

Emeric: do you know if you can use it to do key combinations, like ctrl+C or Alt+B? Do you have to use two keys, or does it have some kind of macro? Thanks for the info. Cheers, Andrés

I'm currently writing a voice activated remote program to use with Cubase. Actually, I already have a program that will start any program on your computer by voice commands. I just need to modify it slightly. I am keeping it simple, pretty much record, stop, rewind stuff. It will be nice for those solo sessions out in the iso booth.

Cordura - Yes it allows key combos. For example, permanently delete is CTRL Backspace in Cubase. You just program one key on the remote to do that.

It can be a little quirky though for certain keys. If your software can remap the key commands (most can), then you can get around any problems.

Pretty cool idea HangDawg, keep us informed on your progress. I would prefer a solution like this.

Recording rubbernecking by Elvis would be drag though -"Stop, stop look and listen... " :)

If you have a mac, then you can do this voice activated thing. It has some speech recognition software, and you can use it to run applescripts. So, for example, you can make an applescript to send a "rec" or a "stop" key to your software.

Applescript can't do keystrokes by itself, but it can do it thru "scripting additions" which are free extensions to the language.

You'll have to use a mic to the mac's sound input, but it could be a cheap one so it's not a problem (your mac already came with one).

Cheers, Andrés

Emeric: just one question. Does this device have a good reach?

I bet a wireless RF keyboard would work for a remote really well too. I have my voice activated program working by the way. Have to use a mic with an on off switch though. Microslough's speech API is a hog, everything going into the mic is analyzed and it kinda boggs down the PC. Works good if you turn off the mic though. Let me know if anyone is interested in it. I'll let you all try it out if ya want. I'm gonna try the wireless keyboard.

Cordura:

Yeah pretty decent. I can sit back behind a drum kit and control it. That's only about 17 feet away though.

HangDawg: I'm using an IR keyboard these days. I haven't gotten around to reinstalling the Keyspan because the initial setup is, as I said - A bit of a curse. But once its set your fine.

The IR keyboard works good as a remote, decent enough range just a little more clumbsy than the tiny keyspan remote that you can put in your shirt pocket during takes.

RF would be better though.

The voice activated program is intriquing HangDawg, but the configuration might be tricky. I don't have any other soundcard except the delta, might be tricky to setup in my multitracker software - coexistance etc.

Nope actually pretty easy. Just tell windows what default set of inputs to use and away you go. You would have to dedicate an input but what the hell, I got 10 of em. I use a delta 1010 without any problems. I'm gonna try to make it fairly configurable. We'll see I guess.

Microslough's speech API is a hog, everything ...

HangDawg, you're right that these speech recognition softwares are cpu hogs.

I think Seanmorse79's idea of having it like a footswitch is pretty good, specially if you're a guitar player.

I've not done any rs232 programming yet, but it's worth a try. That way, I could make my own controller and my own, "CONFIGURALBLE" software. Sounds like a plan to me

I'll do it for the fun of it. But check that iPack think above, it's just 50 bucks and it's USB and PS/2 compatible, plus you can use it with many other things and it already has a software to program it.
