Is $100 a good deal for a set of these in good condition?

I thought I might pick 'em up for my son's kit.

What do you think? Useless?

Useless - probably
Will make you feel like a badass - probably
Will be able to sell them to someone else who wants to feel like a badass - definitely

That's funny!!!
And yes $100 is reasonable for a good set of used Remo Roto's.

Thanks, guys.

LOL@Scrubs. Yeah, I've got plenty of toms already. I thought 100 bucks was a good price though.

I's a good deal. And, also, it's a gimmicky thing, but if having fun by changing the sound of the tom by turning it is going to keep him on the kit a little longer, then how can that be bad.

Hey Supercreep- is this a set of 2 or 3? What are the sizes? How old are they? The reason why I ask is 'cuz a hundred bucks might be a lil' steep depending. Here's why:

I have two sets in the back room:

-2 Remo Roto toms 14" and 16", very solid construction, built in the late 70s. Very versatile tuning range. I've been offered more than $300 for these, but I'm keeping 'em.

-3 Remo Roto toms 8", 10" and 12", cheap construction, built in the 90s. Limited tuning range (mostly high pitched, heads get flubby if you tune them low). The mounting mechanism has broken off and very hard to replace and it renders this set useless. I wouldn't pay more than $50-75 for a mint condition pair of these.

Over the years, people have reminded me that Rotos are "out of style". I just ignore them. Play what you want. Don't follow trends, let them follow you. Roto's can be rather useful if you spend some time with them.

i love my rototoms. they're great for that cheesy 70s concert tom sound and cheaply increasing the number of "things to whack".

i think $100 is a fair price for a set in good condition.

I fear I'm too late.
$100 for Roto-Toms is way too much.
While I don't know your son, I'll assume he's under 35, and will therefore regard roto-toms as a bit too, um...shitty. That $100 will be better spent on an ever-hip Acrolite, some new heads, or a cymbal.

agreed. but you're forgetting that roto toms are cooooooool. :D

and you're also forgetting that it's 3 more things to whack for about $30 each. reaaaaaly hard to beat that. besides, they make those huge round the kit fills in 2112 within reach! tuned right, they can even do it sonic justice for the budding neil peart.

anyway, could money be "better spent"? sure--but outside of an acrolyte or add $20 and pick up a supraphonic, what else has the "bang for the buck" that a set of roto toms has? i'd be hard pressed to find a cymbal at $100 that i'd like, especially if it meant $30+ extra on another stand. new heads are always good.....but they're kinda like buying socks.

but maybe you get excited about buying socks. ;)

anyway, i dig mine, even if they're held together by pipe clamps and duct tape. :p

haha, our school has a set of rotos. Theyre fun to play around with, but I doubt I would actually use them in songs. Unless I happen to join a "awesome" hair metal band

I bought the crappily made '90s style 3-rotos just to cover a Poison song "Bad to be Good" way back then but our band broke up before we could even perform it. HAHA! To be in High School again. I don't miss it one bit.

Yup, those die-cast tuners will break in 6 months of regular use as well and I think all models NOT from the 70's utilize this material. The older ones used steel I believe. BIG difference between the two materials and Remo's profit margin...

and don't forget...

if you tune 'em right, you can almost get an old Simmons *DEW* sound. Sweet.
