Reliable computer tech support website for basic non-music-making questions?

I walk the line
The sites I've run across all seem to be geared towards tweakers. Anybody know of a 'for dummies' type of site?

I won't bore you with the question here, just refer me to a reliable source and I would be forever grateful.
 
Most basic (and advance) questions you ever come across can often be answered by a simple Google search. You can always ask on Facebook and often get an answer. However, if you prefer a forum, There is nothing wrong asking on this forum or any computer forum (Maximum PC, Computer World, etc...)

Got any particular questions?
 
Well, since you asked...

I've got an old PC that died. No power, but not a power supply problem (put in a new ps, same problem). It's an old pos and not worth screwing with to fix. The hard drive is also pretty much full, so a new pc is in the future.

Here's my question: There are a few things that I hadn't backed up off of the drive (yeah, I have a backup, but I didn't get everything I wanted. Lesson learned).

The drive is an IDE that has XP on it. I also have another old XP machine that uses IDE (single drive machine).

Shouldn't I be able to hook up the drive from the dead machine as a slave (should be a jumper configuration, right?) As long as the bios lists the other drive as the boot drive, I should be able to just backup what I want off of the slave, correct? I'll be backing it up to an external usb hd to transfer to a new machine when I get it.

You don't sound like you need a tech.
What you said is exactly how you'd do it.

When you're setting the drive to slave check that the main OS drive in your xp machine is set to master.

That is exactly right. I do it all the time in my job. Another option: for about $15 you can buy an external USB interface that allows you to hook up any internal IDE or SATA drive to a computer via a USB 2 cable. I also use those all the time, and they work fine too.

I thought about that, too, but I thought they were more expensive than that. I'm trying to put the least amount of cash into this at the moment, not that I couldn't use one. Also, I don't know if I could find one locally, and I'm in kind of a hurry to do this.

Hello, there are many companies who support the technical problem, even you specified about music technical problem. I would suggest you try searching in your zone, IT Support is a job which every state and place use for their customer.
