Just wanted to let you guys know that I did in fact quit smoking about three weeks ago. I had tried before and found it terribly difficult but this time was like stepping off a train. I guess I was finally ready. I feel good. Better then I have felt in years and I have already begun to notice the difference in my singing. Thanks to everyone in the vocal forum for being a part of my impetus for change.

Can any of you guys share some daily routines or basic exercises that might benifit anyone trying to strenghten or maintain their voice?

I guess maybe it might be hard to offer generalized suggestions without knowing where anyone stands technique wise, but I figured it was worth asking.

One thing that you can do is make sure that when you sing, you are not a FULL volume.

If you are like most rock and rollers, an assumption here, you have competed with loud guitars, forcing you to sing very loud.

Turn it down.

Billy, that book mentioned previously in this thread, is worth getting. Two easy things are to hum to as a warm-up, and to drink more water. At least 12+ glasses per day, in addition to other beverages.

More water will improve the sound of your vocals, plus it's good for you in general too. One of the benefits is to loosen phelgm
and help you sound clearer, as a result.

Actually, the water you drank 2+ hours before will more of an impact than trying to play "catch-up".

The vocal cords have a form of irrigation system, covered in that book in more detail, BTW.

This is not only good for your voice, but also to your health!!! I still cannot quit smoking totaly (what else to do after sex...??? ) But drinking alot of water realy make my throat feels better. Just make sure you don't go that far from toilet everytime... Good advice, Chris

And after eating or drinking a guiness... Speaking of eating as I understand you are not supposed to drink while your eating because it waters down the stomach fluids and such. Now If you eat three meals a day at which point before or after these meals should you be drinking these 12 glasses of water? Sorry guys I was born confused.

Since beer has alcohol in it, it actually acts as a drying agent on the vocal cords, you need more water to compensate for that.

Luke warm water, not hot drinks or iced beverages etc. , BTW are best for the voice.
