Hi,

My son plays lead guitar in Silent City (metal band). They just composed there very first song and had the opportunity to record this in a studio (actually the other way around ;-).
Anyway, I received the raw tracks from the studio, and tried to make a descent mix out of it.

I had a hard time with the vocals. Next to correcting some of the pitches, it seems to me that the recording was not very good (the raw tracks sounds very dull). I ended up using an exciter in one of the send channels and adding that back to the mix.

Suggestions for improvement are welcome. thanks.

I'll have a go at mixing this and see what I can do, thanks for posting!

Are the vocals a little flat? I'm working on training my ear.

Hi,
BTyre, looking forward to your attempt. Thanks.

JLondon, the original vocal is largely out of tune. Therefore, I manually fixed many notes of the vocal manually (generally shifting half to one semi-tone). This is probably what you hear (and are referring to as flat)?

yeah, not a great recording . Get them to redo the voals (after he learns to sing the thing).

I don't think he is so much out of key as he is trying to sound like Stone Temple Pilots or 3 Doors Down (Kryptonight), just didn't quite get there. At least that is what I heard.

Hi Ben,
I listened to your mix. I like the way in which you did the drums. They seem to have more power than in my mix. I noticed you have put quite some effect to the guitar. Initially, I did the same thing (although less) since I didn't like the sound of the guitar as it was, but also to cover up some of the glitches in the rhythm. However, when I presented this to my son, he didn't like it at all thus I removed it again. You also did a good job on the vocals. Although you might try to significantly reduce the reverb during the chorus although keeping it clearly audible. The bass is clearly audible also. great.

Indeed, some of the tracks were missing, but I have added the missing tracks. There are two vocal tracks. I think something went wrong during recording. One track contains only the lead up to the point you already used it. The backing vocals were also performed by the lead vocalist (just singing the same thing). For the last chorus I used to vocals from the backing track.

If you finish the mix I will ask the band to comment also.
