I need to reformate drive C. I am using the XP disk. My problem is when I try to sign in on the recovery console on drive C, the computer asks me for my administrator password; ... so I added a password but it didn't work, then I took away the password and it still didn't work. This below paragraph says I can just press enter and I can go into the recovery console but such is not the case:

"In the "Recovery Console" (learn more about that that is at Microsoft.com click here), specify the appropriate Windows installation. It will be listed. It's probably #1. Then log on by using your Windows XP Administrator password. You are probably the administrator and the password if you have never assigned is probably blank, so just hit the Enter key. If you run Windows XP Pro and want to turn off the password prompt then learn how here.
case: "

If you're going to reformat, couldn't you just boot from the cd and select "New install"?

Is that all I have to do?

Yep.

Along the way (I haven't done this in a while so I might not be right) it will ask you if you want to repair windows or re-install and format the disk. Choose to format the disk.

I'm at the "Welcome To setup" screen and it gives me three choices:

1. To set up Windows XP new, press ENTER.

2. To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

3. To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Originaly I was choosing #2.

Ok, I chose to Install a fresh copy of Xp, instead of install and repair.

Now It's telling me that I am about to install Xp on a partition that contains another operating system (old xp)... system will cause the os to function improperly.

WAS I supposed to choose the Repair XP option instead?

I haven't been into the set-up for a long time but there should be an option to re-format the drive somewhere.
Can't remember exactly though,sorry.

Well, this time I chose the repair option. Windows is installing right now, I didn't see a reformatt option, honesty I don't even know If I'm doing this right. Windows seems to be installing it'self now and from now will take 37 minutes to complete.

yeah, you need to delete that system partition and create a new partition. then you install XP on that newly created partition.

that will reformat the drive and install a fresh copy

the repair XP option will not reformat the drive. it will (i believe) only overwrite the existing systems files.
