Hi. I'm looking to buy a 4 track multitrack reel to reel recorder. I want to be able to record each track separately while monitoring others. Can anybody recommend a decent one that will not require constant repair (i'm looking at a Tascam 22-4). Also, how does one pan on these machines (like on cassette 4 tracks). Are these reel to reels even capable of panning or can you only do a hard right/hard left recording? Thanks, appreciate answers to a newbie question...

the 22-4 is a good machine, they are '80s machines and do not have as much character to the sound as a Teac 3340 in my opinion. on the other hand, they are better at handling tape and run smoother. so the 22-4 will sound more neutral than the 3340. the 3340 is also more involved to use for recording and bouncing etc. overall, i would recommend a Teac 3440 or 40-4 if you have a few different options. but you can't go wrong with any of the teac/tascams. find the one that's in the best condition at the best price.
