Reducing wind/pop on vocals

Hi all,

I got my Delta 1010LT today, and was doing some live vocal/piano takes.

I was having some levels difficulties, but that's for another topic...

Is there any good way to eliminate the wind/pop noise when singing?

I may have to get a windscreen or pop screen but it could be a little while before i go out and get one.

Any temporary ideas?

A cheap fix for that until you get a pop filter is to wrap a sock around the head of the mic. It will help a little with the wind/popping. Wind screen can be gotten for about a dollar, and are meant more for live performance. For recording you will need a pop filter. Get one as soon as you can, because while a sock will help some, it will also cut out some of the higher frequencies and your vocals will sound muddy.
 
Get a wire hanger and a pair of panty hose. Make the wire hanger into a balloon with a string shape. Then strecth the panty hose over the "balloon" part. Tie the "string" part off to the mic stand and position the "balloon" part about 1 to 3 inches in front of the microphone.

Congradulations you just gave birth to a pop filter.

The homemade pop filter sounds like a good idea.

As for backing off the mic, for some reason, I am the only person who doesn't think that Delta's preamps are too loud. That or my mic is very soft. I would have to add more gain in the control panel to get it at the loudness I would require to back off the mic, but I can play around with it and see how it works.
 
stick a pencil directly in front of the mics capsule, right in the middle. This will diffuse the rush of air in two ways, thus reducing some "pop"
 
When someone sings, the air from his mouth flows in a somewhat downward direction. Place the mic in front of your nose, pointed down at your mouth. That should help. Otherwise, you need a pop filter.
 
As for the pencil, I'm not quite sure I understand.

I'll try the 'nose' placement though, and see how it works.
