Hi,
I'm just finishing my studio (pictures soon), I found out that in the live room the reverb is ca 2,5sec long which might be too long for some application (right?) though it has a buetiful reverb which is very even so I'm affraid to distroy it or to make the room too dead (I'm building moving screens anyway for when I'll need deader situation).
what should I do?
is hanging on the walls few boards of rigid fiberglass (4") covered with cloth will help?
thanx
guy
ps the room is ca5.7x6.7x3.8m (l,w,h)

First of all, nice sized room - mathematically, the only possible problem areas I see would be a height/width node at multiples of 90 hZ.

If you're building moving screens, I'd finish that project first and see what they do for you.

You're right in going for thicker rigid fiberglas if you like the tone of the room - you'll need broadband absorption to shorten the RT60 without making the room more "bass-y", so the thicker stuff is the ticket. You can also help the low end more by "standing off" the absorbers a few inches from the wall - this is almost as good as adding "real" thickness, and cheaper...

If you want flexibility, I'd consider using hinged absorbers that you can open for more absorption, or close for more diffusion. Everest diagrams these in one of his earlier books, and John Sayer has also used them. Check out his version here -

click on absorbers in the index, then click on low frequencies and scroll to the very bottom of the page... Steve

That is a nice sized room. Wow, 2.5 seconds.

I'm with Knightfly on the screens. Wait and see until after they're finished. I'd hate to permanantly kill that kind of natural reverb in a room. You never know when the London Symphony may come-a-knocking. :)

If the screens do not provide the absorption you need there are always gobo's. Or even the office type carpeted divider walls if things are really bouncing around.

ask yourself - when do I ever put 2.5 sec verb on anything???

I rarely use any verb over 2 sec and then it's only to wash some strings or for a ballad vocal.

I'd personally hate to have 2.5 sec verb on everything I recorded.

cheers
