I am recording with a audio tecnica at8449 and a mackie dfx-6 to audiophile 24/96 to acid pro 4 and am looking for some tips on recording loud vocals. I can't seem to find the right settings where i can let go on the vocals without clipping on the recording. please help!

What you need is an out board compressor. Other than that, you just need to turn down the gain until you can't clip it. Don't worry about the levels too much, you can compress it later in the program.

also may help:
mic pads (I clip on a -10db pad on almost all vocal recordings that I do because of my combination of C1 (hot mic) and DMP2 (really hot pre)).
stand back a tiny bit more for those loud parts!

Do you use the mic pad in addition to having the preamp gain turned down?

How about backing off of the mic when you "let go"?
