Damned if I do
OK, here's a cover I did of this classic King Crimson song about 8 or 9 years ago. This was recorded analog on my Tascam 38 and mixed down to DAT (Tascam DA-30 MKII). This was around the time that I got serious about engineering, but I really don't remember all the gear I used. Me on all instruments.

Anyway, enjoy...

Sounds great Madz, and I did enjoy. I could only listen on headphones. I do love Crimson.

Mad,
I usually don't deal with covers but being a pre reformation Crimson nut I had to take a peak to see what song you'd done.
EXCELLENT choice & nice work. This was from the 1st whole LP by the band that I listened to completely.
Being an ignoramus I don't know how many tracks the T38 has but you certainly seem to have bundled together a nice bit of recording & playing.
If only metal heads of today would listen & learn from prog metal masterpieces of the ilk KC would regularly put out there'd be far more variety & interest about today.

Thanks, rayc, I really appreciate it! And I agree, KC is too big an influence to ignore, even for the new crop of musicians.

The 38 is a 1/2" 8-track machine, and IIRC I kept the bouncing to a minimum.

Sounds pretty good..has some elements of a song from that era in the mix. Nice guitar tone...fits well. Actually, the tones used fit well....very vintage sounding. Nice playing Mad. Cool version.

Very cool and interesting.
I am not familiar with the band, so it is all the more interesting having never been exposed.

Cool stuff Mad!

WOW! Wowy,wow,wow!
That was cool man. Great playing.
Did you ever tackle Towers of London?

Awesome MAD!!!

Dude- one of my favorite songs off one of my favorite albums of all time!!! Great job!!! I'm jealous you actually found Kats around DC whoactually enjoy playing this style of music.

One day I'm gonna hunt you down and have you teach me a thing or two. All the best, Rez

Great stuff.....
.....you're some kinda one-man-band-engineering marvel, or something... :D
That rocked....

Very good work Mad, sounds very close to the original version I still have on vinyl! Lets see, that was Fripp, Bruford and John Wetton in the band if I remember correctly at that time, I think they would all say you did the tune justice!

Big Mad... delivering like the postman should!

Very cool and well done!

:)

Dogman - thanks

cellardweller - surprised you've never heard of them, but glad you liked it

EdWonbass - thank you sir! I do need to finish that Towers of London cover, though. The instruments are mostly done, just gotta tackle the vocals.

Rez - thanks, but that was just me playing

Why - glad you liked it ma'am!

Anfontan - appreciate it. I figured it out all by ear from my vinyl copy! Yep on Fripp/Wetton/Bruford

Fancy - thanks! Would you believe I used a Radio Shack PZM for the overhead? 'Cause I did!

Doug - And it wasn't even C.O.D.! :D

Don't know the band. But the playing in this one is really cool. :) That's a long piece to play and especially on analog.

'Coz I imagine it would be really hard to do 10,000 punch ins like we can do today in the digital world. :)

Great playing, dude! :)

Thanks! Very few punches as I recall. The drums were definitely done in a full pass. This was before my digital days, when performance was still king (no pun intended).

Yeah, that's why it's impressive. :) Sometimes, I end up with 200+ takes on a song. Granted some of them I just keep the record button pressed to see if something might get recorded that I like and I just improvise. And sometimes, I'm working out parts. But that's a lot of takes. :)

I just had to pull out the reel and check the track sheets. Seems I did the drums in mono and no bouncing at all!

TR.1 - kick
TR.2 - snare
TR.3 - toms (submixed)
TR.4 - OH
TR.5 - guitar 1
TR.6 - guitar 2
TR.7 - guitar 3 (intro, bridge, outro)
TR.8 - bass

Recorded 8/27/96, so that makes it 10 years ago!!! Yikes, where does the time go? And where does it come from?!?! :D

Send me the tracks for Towers of London and I will knock it out for you. :D

Incredible prog...
