recording WITHOUT a metronome?

Here's the thing. A metronome/click track will not in itself making your performance anything but a steady tempo..if you have enough experience playing to a strict grid, then you'll be able to get as dramatic as you want. Just cause there's a click on the 1, 1 and 3 or all four beats doesn't mean every note has to fall on those...

But really, you just need to be intelligent about it. If it's the type of band that requires more of a live recording, where they solely play off of each other, you'd be the biggest bastard in the world for making them play to a click... There's no rule for or against it, just do what the project needs. If I was recording some bluesy classic rock type band I'd do anything before using a click... you know what I mean?

Recording with a click sure helps with any editing/cutting/pasting they might want done later!

i have this same (problem?)

is that pretty common or do we just have attention deficit disorders?

I'd say ADD in my case.

Backing tracks are repetitive to the point of being boring in and of themselves and that leads to the wandering of the mind.

Then suddenly you’re off the beat.

I find a good way to maintain groove when reocrding with a click is to play off a loop, rather than a straight click. I have an mpc2000 which I'll record a two bar pattern on, then play off that.

I remember learning that it's something about how we want to follow whichever tempo is closer to our heartbeat. In this case, 120 BPM is (or should be...) closer than 60 BPM, so we "feel" the 120 better.
