Hello! I have a friend who just recently bought a new computer. He wants to create a recording setup for him to record his vocals and track out his instrumentals from his keyboard. Problem is, his computer has a vista operating system. He asked the guys at guitar center was there anything that he could use and they said there was nothing. I told him they might not know what they're talking about and that i would ask yall about it. Is there any hardware interface or software that is compatible with vista? He only has usb ports so he would either have to use a usb interface or pci interface. As far as software, we were going to try to install acid pro 4.0.

Cakewalk’s SONAR 6.2, reason and fl have all released vista compatible versions

depends how keen you are to mess about, me personally, i'd re-format with xp and deal with vista in a year or two once they've patched it

I always wait for the 1st sevice pack first but vista is not worth the effort and XP pro will do the job at hand.

My self its hardware upgrade time im at a cross road of mac or pc at the moment for recording

My 2 Watts

The main issue with Vista right now is the lack of audio drivers. There are a few USB interfaces that work with the class-compliant drivers in Windows and those should work in Vista but I'm not sure.

That and the fact that it has so many back-end apps running that you can not turn off that you have to have twice the computer to get close to the same efficiency with XP.

I don't know what you mean about 'so many back-end apps running that you can not turn off'. Every new OS is designed to take advantage of the current level of computing power.

Thanks for the replies guys! He just purchased vista compatible Cakewalk software. I kinda warned him about vista, but he wanted a new computer and the crazy people have vista on all the new computers out!! Seems like they would have straightened out a few more things before they decided to put in on every pc!! Now, all he needs is a compatible usb interface. I've searched tirelessly online to no avail. Is there any pci or usb stuff that's compatible yet? I heard they're supposed to get some new drivers for the m-audio stuff but if he wants to install a pci card, it'll void his warranty when he opens it up!
