Wanting to record band rehearsal for reference purposes with as little fuss as possible. I was curious about using a pzm mic for this. Small room, lots of db.

Any one ever try this?

Yup, I have a nice stereo pair of PZMs that have used quite a lot. They are rather hot condensors so make sure your Mic Pre has a pad on it (-10 db switch).

PZMs only do the magic that they do if they are mounted on a large flat (prefereably shiny) surface. I made some three foot flexi squares that I used as mic stands for my PZMs. The wall will do if it is not covered in foam like most rehearsal spaces.

Um, well mounting a PZM on a flat surface increases its low-end response, but I once used a PZM on a stand as a room mic and got some nice sounds.

That is correct, without the large surface, you will lose the low end.

My only experience with PZM mics was that huge Shure one...we used it as a room mic for electric guitar. It definitely added something to the sound. It was being used in a good room though, I think that's probably important with a PZM.

The whole PZM thing is that it is supposed to pick up direct sound and not room sound.

What it does when mounted on a wall is make that wall vanish with regards to first reflections so it does enlarge the room in a sense. You won't get any comb filtering due to reflections from the wall because with the transducer at the wall the direct and the reflected wave are always perfectly in phase. This gives a 6 dB increase in sensitivity as well.

BTW, flush mounting with the wall gives cleaner HF performance than the mystical cantilevered mounting facing the wall with a gap. All that does is diffract HF from the cantilever and provide multi-pathing to the capsule opening from all around it.

P.S. Glad to be back now that the constant, information free distraction is gone.
