I am new to this whole recording thing. I bought a BR1600CD a couple months back which i really like. I also got a DR670 drum machine. I also recently got a MIDI keyboard and just bought a roland sc-55 off ebay to produce additional sounds. I believe I am going to want to sequence the sounds off the SC-55. I have a Tecra 9100 laptop with no real acceptable sound quality, nor do I have sequencing software. So...what the heck do I need to add to my laptop to be able to sequence sounds from my roland sc55 onto the pc, then move the results of that back down to the BR1600CD once I've got it the way I want it. HELP please!!! ; - )

Are you just doing MIDI or sound too? This Edirol thing is cheap and does MIDI and audio:

But the converters aren't great compared to the M-Audio stuff, so if you want to do recording in a playing sense, you should look at a Firewire or USB Audiophile.

Dunno about software, if n-track does MIDI then that could be a cheap solution. I use an older version of Cubase but it ain't cheap ... Cubasis might be another one to look at though.

Recording to a laptop..what do I need

I will be sequencing sounds from a sound module, using an M-Audio MIDI controller keyboard. I guess my biggest question is the sound card required to do this. Information for desktop type pc's is abundant, but I am not sure where to go to determine what soundcards are available for a laptop. Actually, I am making an assumption here that I NEED a high quality sound card. ALL of my 'recording' will be done on the BR1600, so I really just need to sequence the sounds off the sound module, then have the ability to get them back down to the BR1600. Just not sure what I need to do this.

I use Pro tools with the Mbox and its completely independant from the soundcard on your laptop. works great. You can cownload a free version of the software at Protools.com

Good Luck
