Pain in the ass
I want to record someone whistling for a tune I'm working on. Never done it before. I have a bunch of different mics. c414 eb, 4050, Peluso sdcs, Royer 121 ribbon, md421s, sm57s. Any ideas?

Angle the mic so the whistler is singing either above the mic, below it, or on the side of it. Maybe use a pop filter to catch some tiny bits of wind from the mouth but you probably won't need it.

I've done some whistling before. I ended up setting the mic slightly above my mouth at about a 45 degree angle towards me and the ground. Worked pretty well.

As long as he/she's not blowing directly into the mic I think you should be fine. (or you could have them whistle breathing inwards. :p just kidding)

As I'm sure many would say here, try out different mic positions and see what one works best for you.

the 414 or the 4050 would be best i would yhink... in anycase i wouldn'e eve try it with the 121...

whistle straight ahead, have the mic above in front and to one side angled pointing at the whistler. A good booth is the key here to get the gain cranked with little background noise as possible./ Try and avoid using a gate at all costs on a whistler.

Listen to lots of Mr Whittaker ;)

Another technique I've tried live is to hold the mic just below your chin and then hold 2 fingers up behind the mic. Whistle into your fingers.

I know it sounds funny, but it works.

I've found that multiple passes of the whistling helps give it a little thickness. Otherwise, it'll sound much thinner than in real life...

Someone mentioned in jest: to whistle while breathing in. That's how I whistle!

I have WAY better control of pitch that way. Didn't think I was so strange!

I find that it works a little better too. I was more making fun of myself (but then again, how would you all know I whistle that way?)

Good to see a fellow inward-whistler! :)
