Recording Vocals

I have a Tascam Portastudio 3 which I am using to do all of my recording, the problem is, when I record vocals they sound alright through the headphones while I'm recording them, but when it comes to playing them back they sound muffled & heavy, they also seem to drop out here & there, Im plugging the mic directly into the recorder. Also when I try to mix down, the vocals seem to sit on top of the track instead of blending in as part of the music. Can anyone offer any advice?

#1 get a better microphone. (Condensor)

#2 roll of some bass, just use the headphones as a referencen not for EQ.

#3 when you mix, try to bring the vocal down in volume untill it gets lost, then add a little high mid EQ. 2K to 4K slight boost to cut through the track.

You mention EQ a lot, there are no EQ facilities on the portastudio 3 I have, just basically volume and pan, could I get a similar effect by recording through an amp and boosting the high end while I'm recording? instead of plugging directly into the portastudio and altering the EQ at mixdown?
