Well.....I have been doing some searching looking through threads and such. I have found some great useful tips.

I am working with a great singer, he sings fairly soft. We are more of an acoustic driven band. For comparison purposes .....aka Jack Johnson ....Cat Stevens, Tom Petty.

I record flat. I am getting a good signal. I am using a SM58. Sonar 3.

I am having a problem with getting those subtle nuances in melodies being defined. They are there.... but not prominent. I'd like to find a solution to this without having to add anything beforehand. Suggestions?

Also any suggestions/directions to a good use of compression on vocal tutorial would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah.....he's a "P-Popper". I put one of those foam screens on the mic for a couple of the songs.
It works. Yet.....I am sure it kills the tone.

Thanks, Donny

You might want to try some slight compression going in if you want to make the nuances a little more prominent.

Also, for the popping, try mic placement. Since plosives tend to go down from the mouth, you can try aiming the mic downwards towards the singer or, if pointing upwards, aim it towards his nose instead of directly towards his mouth. Also, lots of the plosive sound is in the low freqs, so if you get a good track with just a few scattered throughout, you could try to just treat those by applying a high-pass filter with the freq at around 150Hz.

Let us know what ends up working for ya! Good luck. :)

You could try raising the sample rate and bit depth (though you don't mention what you are recording at or the soundcard you are using).
Using gear capable of 24\96 will allow you to capture more of the subtle nuances and transients with greater definition, provided you sample at that depth\rate. Close attention should be payed to the gain stage also, in that you capture the full potential of the material being recorded.

instead of the foam cover on the mic...get a windscreen that can extend out away from the mic....i know that helped me alot.

and just for fun, a great way to test it is to have him say "Pursue the Potential Pittsburg Property Pronto". try that with the foam screen and with the mesh type windscreen that extends away from the microphone.

Thanks everyone! Will do!

BTW I am using a Delta 1010.
