recording vocals to background music

Hi, i have been getting into home recording a lot lately, and since I installed windows 2000 i have had a problem. How i recorded before was i downloaded an instrumental or made my own background music. Then i put in my headphones to my receiver and played that background music in winamp so i could here the music in my head, but it was quiet in the room so my vocals were clear into the mic. Then i would mix my vocals into my background music. Now, when I do the same thing, I press record, and it is quiet in the room, but the recording picks up the winamp, or whatever program i use, even though the microphone isn't picking it up. How do I fix this.. Or is there a better way to record my music? please help!

First, what software or application are you using to record? Second, what soundcard do you have? If you have any of the SoundBlaster Live cards, there's an option in the mixer control panel that selects what you record.... if it's set to what you hear, then it'll pick up what WinAmp is playing back. Set this to Line In or Mic In, depending on what input you are using.

It sounds like since you are playing the background music with WinAmp while recording, you don't have multitracking software. Try downloading n-track and see if that works for you. www.n-track.com

i have a soundblaster 64, and i use sound forge usually. but when i use normal windows recorder, it does the same thing. Is there any other way to use a mixer like soundblaster live has for other cards?

I downloaded that multitracking software, but how do i use it to do what im trying to do. thanks
