Recording Vinyl to MP3/WAV

Hi,

I am wishing to MP3 my vinyl collection and need to know
what the best confuguration is.

My hardware setup is as follows:

Technics 1210 Turntables
Technics Stereo Integrated Amp
Technics Mixer
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound Card.

What is the best configuration? Do I record via the mixer
or Amp?

I am using Sound Forge version 7.0b. Is this best software for job
and does anyone know what the best settings are?

Any help appreciated.

You're soundcard is weak but will function. Connect your turntable to the Technics amp (you DO NOT need the mixer). Take a line output from it to the LINE INPUT on the card (more than likely a stereo mini connector as that is common to consumer grade equipment). Record as a .wav file, not MP3 which is a much lower quality and if you're going to put the tunes on a CD, it needs to be in .wav format anyways.

You may want to use a phono pre-amp between the turntable and the soundcard line-in. The no need for either amp or mixer.
Recording to WAV first makes better sense. MP3's has compression of certain audio properties, thus may alter aspects of the sound.

I've used a SB PCI-128 ( lower model to SB Live ) with good results.
Audigy 2 has better specs and SNR.

That's why I suggested the tuner. It IS an RIAA preamp.

Why is the RIAA preamp supposedly necessary? A few years ago I had no problems running my Technics turntable straight into the RCA line inputs on my SoundBlaster Live.

Because of the EQ curve that's needed to flaten out the output response of a turntable.
