I just attempted recording with my laptop via its' built in Microphone IN and I ended up with something that sounded like a 56k download.

I'm guessing my other option is USB? I need to use my laptop as I'll be traveling around recording - so I need something portable.

What would guys suggest? My budget is around $250 - $300. Thanks for any help!

Two options

My understanding is that firewire is the way to go if you have a firewire connection. I had a great deal of difficulty making the fw410 work with a PCMCIA card. I do not have a firewire port so I researched USB units.

The lexicon Omega comes with a USB unit and Cubase software for about $300. For a little more you could get the MBox with protools and without the big factory bundle. I have this and am very pleased with the recording quality though I am having some configuration problems between my laptop and protools.

I was considering both of these options and decided to go with the MBox rather than the Omega. If I had it to do over again, I would still buy the MBox but I would probably try to get the bundle with the extra plugins. That is assuming that I will be able to fix my configuration issue in the near future.

Good luck,
BM
