Just out of trivial interest...

have any of you guys recorded two drummers live? As in two full kits. Me and a friend have decided to rent a practice room once a week to practice our chops and split cost, due to no place to practice at home and I'm thinking some sort of spazzy band will emerge from it. I'm going to try and use one mc012 on each kit as over head then sm57 on his kit for BD then D112 on my BD or vice versa for rough reference recordings, maybe make one of those modded piezo radio shack room mic jobbies someone posted on here too. Some guys here in Leeds recorded a band called Dungeon Dungeon in a huge church, two drummers, live, sounded amazing.

But then theres panning etc- how the hell would you pan all that effectively?! Especially going straight to minidisc from the mixer in the practice room. Hard left right for each kit? Just wondered if anyone had any experience in this.

I did a track with my old band, two of us drumming and just one stereo mic to record the whole band live. We put the kits left and right of the mic's stereo pattern, bass guitar in front and guitar behind. We were well chuffed with the results, if you want to hear it, it's up on our website:

(Matching Claws and Beak is the one you need).

Apart from that, have a listen to some Mice Parade, that guy does a lot of stuff using two kits.

If you're going for a live sort of sound, i reckon some ambient mics around the room would be cool to play around with, adding some close micing on the snares and kicks to give you the option of bringing them out in the mix a bit more.

Another option - face the kits the same way and have a stereo pair in front? Plus a couple of mics behind? Play around, it's something i'd like to mess around with too, let us know if you pick up any tips.

I'd be interested to hear what you come up with, perhaps post some up when you get it rolling?

Wow. That sounds really good. I cant believe you got that sound from one stereo mic. Nice song too, downloading the others now.

Yeah, I'm kind of limited to those mics above, but if i get some room mics I'll give that a go, which I think I will at some point soon. Once I get something done, I'll dig out the post and stick a link up, might be just a drum jam at first but we'll see if anything wholesome and musical comes of it.

Cheers Davenhurst
