You can remove vocals with 2Trk editing software like Sound Forge. Flip the phase in the Right channel (in SF it's called invert/flip) and then convert the wav to a mono file. Much of the vocal and bass (and whatever else was panned dead center) will be gone in the mono file. To bring the bass back in, try actually EQing it OUT of the right channel ... that will stop it from cancelling out the left channel bass freqs.
You can do this without software by just taking the out of the CD Player, phase-reversing one of the cables and then feed your mixer, but pan both channels dead center. It's actually an old trick.
Maybe there's a better way to remove vocals with todays technology, I don't know ... but I hope that helps you anyway.
Good Luck
