So my friends band came in to lay down some drum tracks..something, with my mic collection, that is not an easy task. The drummer brought some drum mics, and i had 2 digital reference 70 dollar dynamics, and an mxl 990. He had a digital reference mic set consisting of 4 mics( 1 kick, 3 tom/snare mics). All of the mics were under 100 bucks, his set actually cost only 100 bucks. I used the 990 as an overhead, one of my dynamics on the snare, his mic on kick, and 2 of his mics on toms...the result? something that is a fairly decent drum track..I was suprised..for being what seems to be almost a 30 dollar kick mic, it held up quite nicely...as did the single mxl 990 as overhead...

So, just so its not about me telling a story, have u ever done any sort of recording with some pretty low grade mics that turned out to be good/better than expected? I will have the drum track sample up soon enough, and if u could show your sample as well.

personally i would be more worried about the cheap mics than the cheap drum set...but if that's all that's available, then do what you can to make the most of it

Of course it depends on what genre you're recording, but I much before a 3 or 4-mic setup to the whole kit like you're doing. Especially at this stage in the game, a handful of decent condensers will do a much better job then a hundred crappy dynamics. To say the least, you sound like a beginner, and at this stage of the game mixing a 8 track kit is a challenge. I only use 4 mics because I still dunno what to do with all 'dem extra tracks

Getting a good sound with cheap mic's is a recurring thread theme here. Many threads covering the MXL603, 990, V67, V69, Shure SM57, Naiant MSH1, Studio Projects B1, etc. If you do a search for practically any mic model you'll find someone who got a decent sound with it.

It's all in the source sound, room and user skill.

Well this thread wasnt really a cry for help as it was..a seeing if under certain mic restrictions(aka cheap-o mics), u were still able to get a good recording out of..w/e ur recording...

My point was only that getting good recordings using cheap mic's is kind of a standard subject at HR.

Ahh...well i wasnt just talking about ur post haha. But that is true...and i do think u can get great, awesome recordings from cheap mics..maybe i dont have a "golden ear" but listening to some demoes done with 300 dollar condensers, and like 1000 dollar ones..idk, through the same pre? they sound pretty damn close.

I am sorry I took your post as a cry for help, I just thought I'd give you my opinion, for what it's worth (probably < 2cents)
I would love to hear the samples
