I have Adaptec Easy CD for recording directly to CD. Adapted suggests you use a phono preamp or an amp for recording to the computer. I bought the only thing I could find, a phono preamp at Radio Shack that uses a battery (seems fragile to me and only have jacks for input and output) and I am not sure whether I'm recording or not. You're to use a "Y" cable from the computer to the preamp (output) and then input to the receiver. So far I have zilch. I'm thinking of buying either a full preamp or an amplifier. What do you suggest, buying a preamp or an amplifier? What would be a better buy?

You just need to get your source, whatever that may be, up to LINE level and feed it to your PC through whatever physical connectors you happen to have on the PC. An amplifier is not the tool of choice, because this piece of equipment takes a LINE level signal and amplifies it to a level suitable for driving speakers. Microphones, guitars and phonographs all need pre-amplification to get the signal to LINE level. The phono pre-amp also throws in some EQ that's defined by the
standard with which the vinyl disc was made.
Tape decks, CD players, MD players, mixers, just about any output on a receiver (e.g. FM, AM, audio track of video or plain old AUX) will provide a LINE level signal suitable for input to a PC. That phono pre-amp is only suitable for phonograph output. What Software are you using for HD recording?
