i only set up overheads (mxl991's) , a kick(990), and a snare mic (sm57).

i don't have a hi hat stand...or i would have hi hats on here.

i put the kick all the way in the drum, resting on a piece of foam. outside sounded terrible...

i'm really only concerned about the snare and kick, so that's why its so minimal

and, sorry about the strange drumming. i'm not a drummer...but i attempt to play 6/8,2/2,4/4,6/8,2/2,4/4....

maybe slightly.

and the overheads are panned and the snare is probably sitting in them to the right

i stereo x/y'd. the snare is panned slightly...

you're just used to music with it down the middle.

tone is what i'm really asking about

Okay, let me recommend this: Take that 990 out of your kick. Use that to mic the snare and use the SM57 for the kick drum. Back in the day when I was really, really clueless, I too tried using the 990 in a kick. The SPL is only 130db and I ended up destroying the mic in short order and getting a horrible sound. I've found that it works pretty good as a snare microphone if you are clever, though. Hope this helps.

yeah, i noticed the distorted look in the wav file on the kick.

i'll try that

it seems i need to roll of some lows.

using my old sound card i notice lows are gone, and so i didn't know they were there. when i use my new one, there's a lot of buzzing from low low end.
