Innovations, thanks for your time to reply. We are thinking about adding a swimming pool onto the back deck either next year or the year after so I'll contact you then.
As far as the eggcarton reference, I think you have the wrong thread but don't worry about it. Danny

You shouldn't have to cover every bit of your walls unless you want a really dead room. You can leave one wall (or parts of all walls) bare. A little bit of reflection will make your room sound bigger. An extra layer (or 2) of dry wall on all your walls will help to give your room a more solid feel and sound. I recomend an extra layer anywhere you plan to leave a wall exposed.
Your room size will limit the amount of furniture you can put in it and still have working room. A desk and a couch will take a lot more room than you might think. Anything you put in the room will in some way affect the sound, desks reflect sound while padded items like couches absorb some. Avoid metal desks unless you want some weird ringing sounds and rattles, in fact avoid anything that might even have the potential to rattle. Mics tend to pick up every little rattle especialy if you have the gain turned up at all.
Speaking of mics, I hope part of your budget is set aside for at least a couple of good ones. Cheap mics may have a purpose but you wont find them very usefull in a studio.
OK, are we ready to hit that record button yet? ....No, not quite yet!

Hey hey hey Good stuff. Almost there, Dani
Ok, mics first. I have a Shure Beta 57A (I like this mic) Shure Beta 58A, an Audio Technica, and my drummer heard me say I wanted another mic the other day so (without telling me) he bought me a Nady SPC25 because he knows I will be micing my acoustic. I'm using it as a learning model (until I get the studio ready) for proper mic placement and understanding, general experimenting (which I am researching now as well). It's a low end mic but will serve its purpose. I will be buying a Shure Sm81 to mic my Martin with (unless my research takes me to a better mic in that price range.) even though I have the Fishman electronics on the Martin, which includes the undertop pickup and the under the strings in the sound hole mic ( which is more sensitive than I would have ever imagined ). Also, I've read where some guitarists will use the on board guitar mic into one channel and then mic the guitar externally as well and run it into another channel. Researching that as well. But these are subjects for another day. Danny (that would be me) has a room to build and I will talk until the cows never make it home! Fine tuning the gear will be one of my last subjects. I have most of what I need but there will be questions!!!!! I would like to emphasize the fact that I'm reading and researching these subjects on my own but often have questions (for you folks) that have to be resolved before I can make any kind of decision, allowing me to move closer to the day I can actually record! So I'm not using the site to soak everyones brain because I'm to lazy to research. (I'm just an ol' songwriter/guitar picker fighting my way through the Electronic Haze)! OH OH, song title.
Ok. Lets get to it.
In the room, there are only a couple of wooden (I call them computer type desks) 29'' deep x 50'' long, with those wooden shelves that set on top towards the back. They are put end to end and take up the door side wall of the room. I need it for gear and monitor. Other than that, only the gear I would be using at time of recording would be the only other items in the room.
First: These equals maximum exposure which tells me that I need to go ahead and drywall the whole room. That's the first thing. I can't do anything else until I do that.
Second: It seems to me, that after putting up the drywall, then it is up to me to determine wall material application as far as type, and configuration by researching. However, if you (Dani) or anyone else has some rules of thumb or experiences to pass along, it would be appreciated. I'll wait for last post before I disappear long enough to get the drywall up. Danny

Dani, and others, Almost done drywalling. Will be completely done this weekend. Can already hear the difference and I like it. If anyone has advice on foam placement , other than the corners, vent, door and window, which Dani has mentioned, (general rules or technical) I would appreciate it. Got a sloped ceiling so leaving that alone. I guess I'm talking about the face of the walls. Or maybe it won't need anything. Thanks alot Dani, and others, I wouldn't have thought that the drywall that I've got up so far would have made that much difference. I put 1/2 inch up. It's going to be a great little room after it's complete. See you on another subject. Thank You, Sincerely, DJDay
