Recording Software?

What is the best recording software that is compatable with windows 98 Se.
I do not like NTFS based systems, such as 2000 or XP. I cannot afford a MAC.

Why don't you like XP?
 
Cakewalk products are/were specifically designed for use on a PC, but most any audio software is compatible with the PC platform these days.

As to which one is the best really depends on your budget and what you're trying to achieve, how many tracks(s) you want to record, and generally how advanced the features need to be for your purpose.

Almost all recording software offers a free demo for download, so you can evaluate it prior to making a purchase. There is even free recording software available which can be surprisingly good (again, depending on your needs).

As important as your operating system (98SE) though, you must make sure the rest of your PC will be compatible, i.e. computer speed, RAM, soundcard, hard drive(s) speed, etc.

If you can give the details of your PC setup, your recording objectives and your budget I'm sure plenty of people here will be able to chime in with suggestions :)
 
i use

magix audio studio and powertracks. both great.
49 bucks and 29 bucks respectively.
links magix.de and pgmusic.com.
also i like traktion, multitrackstudio.com, and fasoft.com n track.
all under 100 bucks and quite capable of doing hits with.
the only limitation is a persons engineering abilities.
powertracks gives you 48 digital audio tracks. and a great midi sequencer all in one package.
if you want free check out audacity. a great effort imho.
but limited midi. then there is the free muzys that comes with a british computer music magazine.
these packages save you the money for spending where it counts for sound - mics, preamps, and a good soundcard.
 
You can download demo versions of ALL of the programs (even ProTools) form their respective sites.
