Hi,

Soon I'll be recording a small latin band, in a 'live' setting. So the musicians will be performing together in a not so big room, and will be recorded simultaneously.

Since I'm not really familiar with choosing the right microphone for a given purpose and situation, I'd like your opinion on my set-up.

*The band:
Guitarist/Vocalist
Bass player (DI)/Vocalist
Percussionist

*Mics at my disposal (I'm not quite sure yet on the number of mics I can get from each type):
AKG C414
AKG C3000
AKG C214
AKG C391B
DPA 4090
RODE NT4
RODE NT1
SHURE SM57
SHURE SM58

*My set-up:
Vocals 1: AKG C414
Vocals 2: AKG C414
Guitar Body: AKG C414 or SM57 or DPA 4090
Guitar Neck: AKG C391B
Bongos + Congas L: NT4a or SM57
Bongos + Congas R: NT4b or SM57
Congas bottom: SM57
Clave: SM57
Guiro: AKG C391B

I know experimenting with different mics is the best way to go, but since I have to 'rent' them, I should know in advance which ones I'll be using..

Comments much appreciated!

Is everything to be acoustic or will there be a PA involved?

No PA, everyting acoustic.
I will do monitoring for the musicians with headphones

Well then that's going to make it a whole lot easier!

I would go with what is listed under "my set up" it should work out good.
The only thing I'm not seeing is a stereo pair for a room mix.

And your going to get some track bleed but that shouldn't be a problem unless they want to do some post recording or fixing.

I hope your getting some cash for this the microphone rental then your time etc.

Thanks for your reply.

I know there are no room mics, but I have only 8 channels/mic pres on my interface. I already have to switch between clave/guiro and 2nd vocals in some songs.

I'm aware of the track bleed, so I will not be able to edit afterwards.
But can I do some processing (for example chorus on the vocals) without really interfering with the bleed signal?

In post? It's going to be hard but it all depends on what you have to work with.
Can't say not knowing. Maybe a splash of FX may not be a trouble.

Good luck with the recording and post the final product here in the MP3 clinic.
