Recording/Selling Fees

Along with other (smaller) ventures, I'm toying with the idea of recording some local marching band competitions, burning them onto CD, and selling them to family members and friends of the students involved. (There's been a bit of interest, so it's definitely worth checking out.)

I know that, for the most part, the tunes that the bands are doing are copyrighted by publishing companies (i.e. Hal Leonard, Arrangers Publishing, etc.). Unless it's an original composition from a member of the ensemble (or staff), it's 99% probable that it's copyrighted by one of these groups.

So what do I have to do / where do I have to go to get a license to produce these CDs ... with the focus on me making a profit. (Not a large profit, but a profit none-the-less. *grin*)

Thanks in advance for your feedback. It's greatly appreciated!

PS - I've checked out the BMI and ASCAP websites, but they haven't been very helpful. That's why I'm checking here ... and I'm sure somebody knows something.

To obtain the license you should be a member of the Harry Fox Agency

actually go to ascap.com and search the ace database for the songs and see who the publishers are then contact them........one step further it will probably not be worth it bruh....cuz u gonna have to pay royalties on that ish and since you are not affiliated with a record label or harry fox nor the product tracked with upc codes it is unlikely that they will grant a license out of the goodness of there heart...... Unless you plan on selling 1,000's of copies its not worth ur time IMO....... If your lookin to make a quick score look in a different directions....Of course you could just do it without permission since ur only gonna sell a few copies I doubt it be worth their time to hunt you down ans sue you ova pennies....but its ur call
